Web Design, finding the sweet spot.

Getting a website is a great start to getting your business online, but some companies simply go wild when it comes to the cost of Web Design. The scarier thing is, if you don’t know much about websites, you might just assume they are correct and pay upwards of $5000 for a simple website.

Why a website?

When it comes to modern business, you need to have an online presence. Whether its simply a Facebook page or website explaining your services. You may even need to get your products online and sell internationally. A website is a perfect place to have up to date information for you potential customers to find. We are going to look at two different ends of the web design scale and how you can know what you are getting.

Cheap vs. Expensive Web Design

There are two ends to web design. The trick is getting that sweet spot in the middle for best value. That sweet spot is where you are paying enough money to get the features, quality and support that you need to have a happy website experience.

Too Cheap

Let’s look at some TOO cheap examples. You may have seen plenty of ads for Wix, Weebly and even Vistaprint Website Builder. These are perfect examples of – you get what you pay for. A lot of these budget website designers are lacking in some very important features. They are often very easy to use, having templates and drag-n-drop builders, but what they gain in ease they lose out in SEO, support and back-end coding.

When you are building a website, you need to make sure it is able to be read easily by humans as well as search engines. If Google can’t browse your site easily, your information won’t show in front of your customers in searches. That is where you move in to paying a bit more for someone to build the site for you. If you are up for it, you can also use a customizable platform like WordPress.

Too Expensive

Paying someone else to do you website also brings some dangers. There are many well-meaning web design businesses that are simply charging too much. There are also many dodgy businesses that are simply looking for a quick easy job to make a lot of money from your pocket.

We have had reports of small businesses paying between $7000 and $17000 for a simple site for their small business. Once the site was designed, the company gave minimal support and wanted to bill for every contact. Then after looking around they found that other websites by the same company were almost copy-paste with the logos and words changed.

If you are unsure about how much is too much – call someone local (even your IT provider) and get a second opinion.

The sweet spot

A general website for basic service information and a contact form should cost you any where between $1000 and $3000. Obviously, the more features you want in you site, the higher up that scale it goes. If you are wanting a shopping cart to sell products (e-commerce), you can expect to pay a lot more as this usually requires special knowledge and plugins. E-commerce sites can cost anywhere from $4000 upwards, so keep that in mind.

What are you waiting for?

By all means, do not be scared about investing a little money in your online presence. The best place to start is with a Facebook page – IT’S FREE. Then you can get your website up and catch more customers searching for your product or service. Facebook and other social media platforms allow you to advertise to many more people at a much lower rate than the newspaper and people will actually see it!
